History

Welcome to The Riverwind Inn, the quintessential Connecticut bed and breakfast.

The Riverwind Inn is located in quaint Deep River, nestled between Essex and Chester in the heart of the Connecticut River Valley. The original Federal Style house was built in 1854, with a seamless addition built on in 1987. It has been operating as an Inn since 1985.

Deep River and the surrounding towns are known for the ivory trade. The growth of the piano industry led to a new use for this exotic and

long-treasured substance and linked this area to Zanzibar for its ivory.  The Piano Works on Main Street, was once a factory that produced piano keys.

Once known as “The Queen of the Valley”, Deep River and surrounding towns have strong historical bonds.

Experience

The Riverwind Inn is nestled between Essex and Chester, in quiet, historic Deep River, central to the area’s many pleasures. Suggestions for the day’s events are always available from your Innkeepers, Elaine and Leo.

Upon returning to the Inn, afternoon snacks with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and bottled water are provided. Complimentary sherry is always available. Relax on our wraparound porch in one of our rockers, or sit under a canopy of mature trees in Adirondack chairs.

Evening brings exquisite dining with numerous cuisines from which to choose. A number of cafes are located in our small villages, and wonderful gourmet picnic fare is available for your enjoyment at any of the lovely spots along the river or in front of a fireplace at the Inn.

Within five miles of the Inn are many renowned restaurants featuring extraordinary seafood, traditional New England fare, or exemplary continental cuisine.

Eight traditionally appointed guest rooms provide comfort and privacy. All rooms have private baths, hair dryers, AC, Wi-Fi, ceiling fans, period antiques, and some have fireplaces. There are two common areas with fireplaces, and one features our 12-foot-long Rumford fireplace made of stone from the original foundation.

Start each morning at the Inn with our complimentary full country breakfast, served individually in our candlelit dining rooms between 8:30 and 9:30 am. Relax, join in great conversations, and meet new friends while planning your daily excursions. For those early risers, coffee and tea are available in our upstairs coffee room.

After breakfast, start each day of your vacation or romantic weekend getaway in Connecticut exploring our River Valley. Picture-postcard seasons, superb dining, exceptional theater, and the relaxed pace of our small villages are only a few of the many reasons visitors travel to the Connecticut River Valley.
